The Daytona was named because of Triumph's success at the Daytona races in 1966 and 1967. This model took over the role of a sports machine from the capable T100SS.
Sporting twin carburettors (twin Amal Monoblocs originally - twin Amal Concentrics from 1968), it had a reasonable performance increase over the T100SS. The first Daytonas were released in the same paint scheme as the T100SS, and even had Tiger 100 on the side panels. From 1969 they had 'Daytona Super Sports' (UK) or 'Daytona' (US) on the side panels in the usual script style.
The engine didn't really get developed much after 1969 when the oil feed to the crank bearings were taken through the end of the crank. The later engines apparently had a compression ratio of 7.5:1. The lack of developments was mainly due to the financial problems the company was going through at the time.
1974 saw the end of the Daytona production, the year it got torpedo silencers to cope with the noise legislation. All production ended when the Meriden workers staged their sit-in at the factory from September 1973.
